In September 2011 Tregear Public requested a hands on gardening program with objectives of engaging participants in authentic meaningful adult education using a student centred strengths based approach to reduce barriers to participation including previous negative learning experiences, caring responsibilities, intergenerational unemployment and limited knowledge of opportunities available. The program also aimed to build participants confidence, problem solving skills and capacity to learn in a more formal context while building a sense of belonging and giving individuals and groups a voice in their community.
Increasing participation by developing pathways and information to participants about further training opportunities in TAFE proved an effective strategy.
